I'm building my first WordPress site and while I've got most things working well (thanks to the great threads on here!) but am having trouble with one major thing that I can't find a similar thread on that has a solution I can use so hopefully someone can help me here.
I'm using the Twenty Thirteen theme and want to add a widgets to the sidebar/secondary widget area. Unfortunately, when I add a widget my layout for the main content goes crazy and squashes it all up to the left. Here's an image showing what I mean:

I've tried playing with the CSS for the sidebar and tried some php editing after reading another post with a similar problem to no avail.
Can anyone help ne with this? I'm sure it Must be something simple I'm missing but I've spent a few hours on it now and really need some help.
