katemariep on "Need advice - Is it the theme or me?"

I'm new to WordPress, have little experience with it, and need advice.

I purchased an eCommerce theme. After an update (of WordPress and the theme) there was a fatal error that prevented me from logging into the admin area. I went to Support for the theme and after several days and a bit of run around found out that the theme does not support the update for a plugin that is part of that theme, which is what is causing the conflict.

It's fixable, if I buy the $99 license for the plugin and upgrade through them. (I'm sure there are patch kind of workarounds too, but frankly, doing stuff like editing PHP files and keeping track of edits and things through future upgrades isn't feasible at my experience level.)

My questions are:

1) Is it normal for Themes to not support upgrades to plugins that are incorporated into the theme.
2) If it is normal, how can I roughly determine what the actual cost of maintaining the theme will be.
3) I don't know if recommendations can be made here, but if so and it's determined that what's happening with this theme is not normal, I need a good, solid, clean, ecommerce/blog type theme that is responsive, and that I can incorporate an event scheduler into. Paid is fine, it does not have to be free.

Thanks!
Kathleen
